What is a POP (Point of Presence)?

If you work in connectivity or IT, you’ll probably have heard the term POP, or Point of Presence, used frequently. But what does it actually mean, and why should you care about where a network provider has its POPs? 

Put simply, a POP is a physical location where a network provider has equipment that connects customers and networks to its wider infrastructure. 

Think of it as a gateway into a network. 

The more strategically located and well-connected those gateways are, the more options there are for moving data efficiently, reliably and resiliently around the network.

So, what exactly is a POP? 

A Point of Presence is a physical facility containing the networking equipment needed to connect a provider's network to other networks, carriers, data centres and customer connections.

A POP might be located within a data centre, carrier hotel or other telecommunications facility. 

When a customer connects to a service through a provider's network, traffic will typically enter that network through one of its POPs before being transported towards its destination.
